Bumper Repair in the
Antelope Valley
A parking post that came out of nowhere. A runaway shopping cart at the Antelope Valley Mall.
The pickup ahead of you on the 14 is shedding gravel. Bumpers exist to take the hit first, and on a modern car, the bumper you see is actually a plastic cover stretched over an energy absorber and a reinforcement bar. That design saves lives at low speeds. It also means the damage you can see is not always the damage you have.
Westside Body and Paint has been repairing and replacing bumpers, fenders, and body panels since 1978. We are family-owned, and local drivers have voted us the Antelope Valley’s Best Body Shop eight years running, including 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Repair First, Replace When It Is Right
Scuffs, scratches, small cracks, and shallow dents in a plastic bumper cover can usually be repaired: sanded, welded or filled, then refinished to match. Repair costs a fraction of replacement, and it is where we start.
Plenty of regional bumper repair quotes jump straight to a new cover because replacement is simpler to write up, not because it is what the car needs.
That said, repair has real limits, and we would rather name them than paper over them. Deep gouges that tear through the plastic, ripped mounting tabs, a crushed energy absorber behind the cover, or a bumper that has already been repaired once are all replacement territory.
When a cover is done, we install a quality replacement to OEM procedures, and any part that does not fit factory-right goes back to the supplier instead of onto your car.
What Hides Behind a Bumper Cover
Here is the honest part most bumper pages skip: the plastic fascia is a skin. Behind it sit foam absorbers, brackets, and the reinforcement bar that actually manages crash energy, and a scuff that looks cosmetic can hide crushed foam or a bent bracket.
California law requires shops to write initial estimates from visible damage only, so if the impact was more than a scrape, we ask your approval to pull the cover and look. When hidden damage turns up, we photograph it, document it, and send the supplement to your insurer before extra work begins.
Your first number can move. What should never move is your understanding of why.
Fenders and Panels: The Metal Side of the Job
Fenders are a different trade from bumpers. Where a bumper cover is flexible plastic, a fender is stamped steel or aluminum, and repairing one means real metalwork: reshaping with hammer and dolly, sometimes welding, then refinishing.
Aluminum panels demand their own tools and training, which is one reason we hold I-CAR Gold Class certification—a standard fewer than 15 percent of U.S. body shops reach, and one our technicians renew with training every year.
When a fender or door panel is past saving, the replacement gets fitted and aligned to factory gaps, because a panel that is straight but sitting proud of its neighbors is not a finished repair.
Sensors, Cameras, and the Modern Bumper
Park sensors live in bumper covers now. Blind-spot radar hides behind rear fascias, and forward cameras watch through front ones.
Replace or repair a bumper on a vehicle with these systems, and the work is not done until the sensors are transferred, aimed, and verified—which is why our repairs follow OEM procedures and include post-repair scanning.
A bumper that looks perfect but leaves your blind-spot monitor staring at the wrong patch of road is a repair that failed quietly. We do not deliver those.
Paint That Disappears Into the Panel
Every repaired or replaced bumper and panel gets refinished in our PPG water-based paint system, computer-matched to the color your car is now rather than the code it was born with, then blended into the surrounding panels and cured in a downdraft booth.
The system also produces about 90 percent lower VOC emissions than traditional solvent paint. Plastic takes paint differently from steel, and each gets prepped accordingly—which is the unglamorous reason the finish actually holds up long-term.
Parts, Insurance, and How Long It Takes
A word on parts, because it surprises people: many policies allow insurers to specify aftermarket or recycled parts instead of OEM. You always have the right to choose OEM and pay the difference, and we explain your options clearly before anything is ordered.
As a preferred provider for AAA, State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, Wawanesa, and California Casualty, we handle the claim, the photos, and the supplements directly with your adjuster so you don’t have to play middleman.
On timing, straightforward bumper repairs are often done in about a day, while a replacement with paint typically runs a few days. Sensor calibration, backordered covers, and hidden damage can stretch that timeline—which is why we give you a real, accurate completion date after inspection rather than a guess before it.
Your repair is fully backed:
- Labor: Covered by our lifetime warranty for as long as you own the vehicle.
- Parts: Covered for two years or the manufacturer’s term, whichever is longer.
- Plus, our rental partners, Hertz and Enterprise, keep you moving seamlessly while your car is in the shop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Often, yes. Scuffs, scratches, small cracks, and minor dents in the plastic cover are usually repairable at a fraction of the replacement cost. Deep tears, broken mounting tabs, crushed absorbers behind the cover, or prior repairs generally mean replacement. We start every estimate from the repair option and tell you plainly when it will not hold.
The bumper is the impact system at the front or rear: a plastic cover over an absorber and reinforcement bar. Fenders are the metal panels over your front wheels. They damage differently and repair differently—plastic work on one, metalwork on the other—and we handle both, along with doors, quarter panels, and hoods.
A repairable scuff or crack is often a one-day job. Replacement with refinishing typically takes a few days. Add time for sensor calibration, parts on backorder, or hidden damage found behind the cover. We commit to a date after we have seen the car, not before.
If your vehicle has park sensors, blind-spot radar, or cameras at the bumper, yes. Those systems must be transferred, aimed, and verified after the work, and our repairs include post-repair scanning to confirm everything reports correctly before you drive away.
Yes. Some policies let insurers specify aftermarket or recycled parts, but the choice to use OEM is always yours, with you covering any price difference. We walk you through the options before ordering, and we reject any part that does not fit factory standards.
Because California estimates are written from visible damage, and bumper covers are very good at hiding what is behind them. If teardown reveals crushed absorbers or bent brackets, we document everything with photos and clear it with you and your insurer before doing the additional work. The estimate changed because the facts did.
